3 Google Updates Worth Knowing About

Posted by in Google Apps Marketplace, Google Docs, Google Gmail, Google Voice on May 21st, 2010 | 1 Comment

It’s overwhelming to keep track of everything Google does.  One day they’re improving Google Docs, another day they’re changing Google Search, and then they release Google TV.  There has been so much going on lately with Google.  Google is improving everything they do all of the time — that is what they do.  Here are three additions to some Google services that have gotten overshadowed by the major announcements coming from the Google I/O.

1.) New Themes in Google Forms

24 new themes have been added to Google Forms.  Thanks to their partnership with iStockPhoto, they were able to include lots of new imagery into their forms.

2.) Google Voice For Students

How To Upgrade To The New Google Docs

Posted by in Google Docs on May 14th, 2010 | Comment »

Google DocsI’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about the new Google Docs and what you have to do to upgrade so you can use the new features.  The common question I’ve been getting is “why am I not seeing the new Google Docs?”  This is because Google is still working on the development of these new features, so they have not upgraded everyone to the new Docs yet. However, you have the option upgrade to the new Google Docs by enabling it in your settings.  In order to upgrade your Google Docs, follow these instructions:

1.) Click “Settings” in the upper-right hand corner of Google Docs.

2.) Click “Document Settings.”

3.) Click the “Editing” tab.

4.) Check the box that says “Create new text …

Google Apps Takes Shot At Microsoft Office

Posted by in Google Apps, Google Docs, Microsoft on May 11th, 2010 | 1 Comment

Google Apps vs. Microsoft OfficeGoogle took a shot Microsoft today on their Google Enterprise Blog with an article titled “Upgrade here.” As you can imagine, Google’s problem with Microsoft is the same as my problem with Microsoft. The cost of their products is way too high and you simply don’t get what you pay for.

Every 3 years, Microsoft expects you to upgrade to the latest and greatest edition of Microsoft Office or even their operating system for that matter. However, all it really is after all is just a few aesthetic tweaks and a couple of upgrades that you’ll probably never end up using anyway.  This is Microsoft’s bread and butter. Is there any difference between Windows Vista and Windows 7 besides the bottom bar, a …

Google Docs Adds New Features, Threatens Microsoft Word

Posted by in Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets on April 12th, 2010 | 5 Comments

Google DocsI conduct all of my word processing in Google Docs. The reason I started using Google Docs, which you can read more about in Zadling’s very first blog post, Why I began using Google Docs, was convenience, speed, and accessibility.  The ability to access the latest version of my documents from any computer was a boon for my productivity and simply made my life easier.

The question has been asked for months ever since Google Docs began gaining traction: can Google Docs truly challenge Microsoft Word as a competitor? Previously, Google Docs was simply a place to store documents.  Essentially acting as an online backup resource for your documents rather than a person’s primary word processor.  I use Google Docs as my primary word …

How Cloud Computing Works

Posted by in Google Apps, Google Docs on March 19th, 2010 | 1 Comment

I use Google Apps every day, so it’s surprising to me when I find that friends of mine, even tech-savy individuals in their 20′s and 30′s, have neither used or even heard about Google Apps or even the term cloud computing.

Cloud computing is a term to describe internet-based computing.  It simply means that the applications and files that you use are stored over the internet rather than on your actual computer.  There are several advantages of using a cloud computing such as speed, collaboration, efficiency, and convenience.

Here is an excellent short video to explain what cloud computing is and how cloud computing works:

Google Apps Success Story: Sports Basement

Posted by in Google Apps, Google Docs, Google Gmail on March 14th, 2010 | Comment »

Google Apps Success StorySports Basement is a specialty sports retailer focusing on runners, swimmers, and backpackers.  Their business previously used Microsoft Exchange and finally decided to switch to Google Apps for Businesses and they have not looked back since then.

The main advantage of using Google Apps over Microsoft Exchange is switching from an on-premise solution to a cloud-computing based solution, which is vital for the company’s e-mail using Google Gmail for businesses.  Another tremendous advantage of Google Apps is allowing workers to collaborate in real-time from different locations.

David Rumberg, Sports Basement’s CIO, states that the ability to upload HR forms to Google Docs as templates where co-workers can always access the latest form, copy it, and fill it out has been one of Google App’s most …

Google Docs Tip: Legal Form Templates

Posted by in Google Docs on March 11th, 2010 | Comment »

Google Docs Legal FormsOne of the many great features of Google Docs is its Template Gallery.  Templates include a resume builder, budget planner, invoices, and to-do lists.

The most useful templates I’ve came across are from RocketLawyer.com.  Rocket Lawyer provided Google Docs with a variety of basic legal forms that individuals can download and use rather than having to hire a lawyer for simple legal agreements such as promisory notes, lease agreements, living wills, bills of sale, and non-disclosure agreements.

So the next time you need help drafting a legal agreement, Google Docs may be your best bet.  Simply search Google Docs templates for what you need or search RocketLawyer.com in Google Docs.…

Why I began using Google Docs

Posted by in Google Docs on March 10th, 2010 | 1 Comment

Google DocsI began using Google Docs in December 2009.  I was previously aware that Google Docs existed for several months prior to that time, but I never took the time to use Google Docs or truly understand all of its capabilities.  For me, I simply thought Google Docs was a place to store documents that you open in Gmail.  I never thought to use it as my primary word processor or to use it to easily share my documents with others.

That all changed when I began studying for the Pennsylvania Bar Exam.  I studied in several different locations — at my home, at coffee shops, at the library, and at  a model home where I often worked throughout the week.  It started to become a …
