Google will soon be releasing Google Voice, the competitor to Skype — and more! The desktop application is currently being tested internally among Google employees before a beta version is released to the public for testing prior to a final version release. However, the mobile application is available if Google accepts your invite request.
Google Voice promises to be revolutionary. Last November, Google acquired start-up Gizmo5 to help get the project going. Google Voice has now been a project that has been worked on by Google for about a year now, turning 1 on March 11.
You can get updates on the project on Google’s official Google Voice Blog or you can also subscribe to the Google Voice YouTube Channel.
So what makes Google voice “revolutionary” you ask?
Google Voice Features:
- Have 1 single number — you’ll be able to set up a unique Google Voice number. You will then have the option to route which telephone devices should receive the call from the Google Voice number. When someone calls your Google voice number, you can choose to have your cell phone, business number, and home number all ring at the same time, or you limit calls to any particular number. You also have the option to select which phone will ring depending on the time of day or who is calling.
- The ability to listen to voice messages live before answering.
- Receive transcripts of voice mails with the ability to respond with a text message.
- Block unwanted callers.
- Share voice mailboxes.
- Easy conference calls.
- Custom greetings – set up different greetings for different callers.
- Low-cost international calling.
- No caps on the number of voice messages you can store.
- No automatic deletion of voice messages after 14 days.
- Embedded voice mail player in Gmail.
- Free text messages.
- SMS text integration with your inbox — respond to text messages from your inbox.
